Scientists admire dialectic methodology in Tibetan schools, says His Holiness

DHARAMSHALA: Interacting with thousands of Tibetan students today, His Holiness the Dalai Lama said scientists highly admire the way of teaching students in the Tibetan schools and monasteries through dialectic, which helps the students to learn what they have studied.

"The aim to teach dialectic is to help learn what one studies through the science of reasoning," His Holiness told over 3000 students, which include students from 78 colleges in India and 18 schools from all over India.

His Holiness was speaking on the opening day of a two-day annual teaching for Tibetan youths at the Tibetan Children's Village school. With an aim to introduce Tibetan youngsters to Buddhism, Dawa Tsering, a member of Tibetan Parliament, pioneered the initiative in 2007.

His Holiness spoke about the process of dialogue that evolved between the Tibetan Buddhists and the scientists, and how the monks in the Tibetan monasteries started learning science in the recent years.

"Even though the monks do not know mathematics, many of those who come here to teach science highly appreciate the monks for their extraordinary intelligent mind to understand the subjects through reasoning and analysis," His Holiness said.

"During our frequent meetings, many scientists who teach science in the Tibetan monasteries express their admiration of our students unique faculty," he added.

"It is of paramount importance to get full understanding and realisation of whatever one subjects through analysis and reasoning,” His Holiness told the students.

His Holiness told the students to study the tenets of Buddhism, which he said should not be just left in the scriptures.

His Holiness will meet with the students on the second or last day of the teaching tomorrow.
